A squad-based CRPG that drops your Desert Rangers into frozen Colorado, where every skill check, faction call, and bullet spent ripples across a dark, darkly funny post-apocalyptic world.

Wasteland 3 is a party-based CRPG set in the nuclear-winter hellscape of Colorado, where you command a squad of Desert Rangers sent north to cut a deal with a self-proclaimed ruler called the Patriarch. The series that arguably invented the blueprint Fallout later made famous is back here in its most polished form, blending isometric exploration, XCOM-style grid combat, and a reactive narrative thick enough to chew on. You start by building two custom Rangers from the ground up, fine-tuning Attributes, and picking from a skill list that includes both tactical staples and gloriously weird options: Toaster Repair for cracking open loot-filled appliances, Sneaky Sh*t for stealth ambushes with bonus damage, Nerd Stuff for hacking, and Kiss Ass or Hard Ass for persuasion and intimidation respectively. The full squad tops out at six, mixing your handcrafted duo with recruitable companions who each carry their own personality and quirks. Combat is turn-based, grid-based, and action-point-driven, familiar territory if you have spent time with XCOM or Divinity: Original Sin 2. Terrain, cover, overwatch, and flanking all matter. The Kodiak, your upgradeable armored truck, lets you traverse an overworld map full of random encounters and faction events, and it can even roll into certain fights with its mounted cannon. Fights held up well past the 50-hour mark for most players, partly because mission design tends to offer enough positional variety to keep things from becoming routine. The shared inventory system and the automatic skill-routing (the correct character just does the relevant check without micromanagement) are quality-of-life wins that streamlined veterans of Wasteland 2 will genuinely appreciate. Where the game earns its reputation is in its faction reactivity. Colorado is run by factions with clear identities and contradictory agendas: a Reagan-worshipping cult, a corrupt Patriarch dynasty, entrenched oligarch families, and various flavors of cannibals and slavers. Your choices visibly shift how these groups treat the Rangers, and the ending state of the world reflects your cumulative calls across the whole campaign. The writing mixes grim subject matter with absurdist humor, the kind of tone that can produce a cyborg chicken as a genuine damage-dealer in the same playthrough where you are making life-or-death calls about entire settlements. Side quests are generally substantive rather than filler XP sinks, which is the right call. Critiques are real but manageable. Difficulty spikes can arrive without much warning, and the branching consequence system is not always transparent enough to let you predict how factions will read your decisions. The launch build had bugs, crashes, and co-op desyncs, though patches have addressed the worst of them since release. The humor is polarizing: some of it lands with precision, some of it overshoots into cartoon territory that undercuts the darker beats. And while the overworld map travel creates a survival tension that works, some of its random-encounter repetition does wear thin by the late game. Post-launch, two DLC expansions, Battle of Steeltown and Cult of the Holy Detonation, added further narrative content for players who wanted more Colorado after the credits. Monika, Scout Team
