About War Mongrels (PC) Steam Key
War Mongrels is a real-time tactics game set on the Eastern Front of World War II, developed by Destructive Creations, the Polish indie studio previously known for the deliberately provocative Hatred. If you know that pedigree, the tone here will not surprise you: this is a game that leans hard into the ugliness of that particular theatre of war, and it does not apologize. Think Commandos or Shadow Tactics in its basic DNA - you control a small squad of characters, each with distinct abilities, and you pause, plan, and execute in environments packed with German soldiers, patrol routes, and line-of-sight cones. The setting and the mood are the strongest selling points. On a pure mechanics level, the game holds up reasonably well if you accept its limitations. Each character brings a specific toolkit - distraction, sniper elimination, close-quarters takedowns, or area control - and the levels are designed around combining these in sequence. The patrol timing puzzles have that satisfying click when they come together, and a handful of missions genuinely test your patience in the good way, where a failed run teaches you exactly what you did wrong. The stealth loop is functional, if not as elegantly tuned as the Mimimi catalog (Shadow Tactics, Desperados III). Enemy AI is predictable enough to plan around but occasionally erratic in ways that feel like bugs rather than design, which feeds into the mixed review score this title carries. The campaign runs roughly 15 to 20 hours depending on how much you retry missions for clean runs. There is a co-op mode that splits squad control between two players, which is actually where the game finds its best moments - coordinating a simultaneous takedown over voice chat hits differently when a real person is on the other end making mistakes with you. Solo play is perfectly viable but the pacing drags in the middle chapters where mission design becomes repetitive before the story picks back up. Speaking of story: it is darker and more character-driven than you might expect from a tactics game, touching on desertion, atrocity, and survival guilt among Eastern Front soldiers. It is not subtle, but it is earnest, and that counts for something. Where War Mongrels loses points is in its technical and quality-of-life layer. The UI is cluttered, the pathfinding will occasionally send a character on a scenic route through an enemy's vision cone, and the checkpoint system in some missions is stingy enough to feel punishing rather than challenging. The 75 percent positive Steam rating reflects a game that clearly has a dedicated audience who connected with its atmosphere and setting, but also a real group of players who bounced off its rougher edges. There is no mod ecosystem to speak of, and post-launch support has been limited, so what shipped is essentially what you get. For a franchise like Commandos this would be a dealbreaker; for a mid-budget indie, it lands somewhere in the range of "acceptable friction." If you have already exhausted Desperados III and Shadow Tactics and want more of that real-time tactics fix with a harder edge and a European indie sensibility, War Mongrels scratches that itch. Newcomers to the genre will find the difficulty steep and the onboarding modest - the tutorial covers the basics but does not hold your hand through the deeper timing puzzles. Approach it as a second or third game in the genre rather than a first, manage your expectations around the production polish, and there is a solid 15-hour tactics experience buried in the grimness.
