I went into this skeptical that fishing would hold up in VR, and came out genuinely surprised by how well the core loop translates when you're physically casting and winding a reel with tracked controllers. The act of managing line tension, choosing between float, spinning, ground, and fly techniques, and watching a fish actually fight back through your hands makes the simulation feel more tactile than any flatscreen fishing game I've tried. Starting out at Betty Lake, a scenic Rocky Mountains-style pond, and then unlocking new locations as your XP and budget allow gives the progression a satisfying rhythm, even if the early grind is real. The depth is legitimate. You're picking hooks by size, matching bait to conditions, thinking about time of day and weather, and juggling the decision to sell your catch for gear money or release it for bonus XP. Over 20 fish species with varying sizes and fight behavior means your sessions rarely feel identical. The skill tree keeps the numbers ticking over between trips, and the leaderboards and online co-op or PvP modes mean there's a reason to chase personal bests beyond solo satisfaction. For a game that launched in 2018, the content library has clearly grown through DLC packs covering locations like Greenland, Kariba Dam, and Moraine Lake. That said, the VR implementation has real friction. Controller-based reeling can feel jumpy and inconsistent, which matters a lot when techniques like a slow, straight retrieve are central to certain fishing styles. Some players will also find the avatars in multiplayer oddly cartoonish against an otherwise grounded visual style. The main menu cabin music has an infamously grating quality that reviewers across the board flagged, and the audio mix defaults to a punishing volume. None of these are dealbreakers, but they do interrupt the calm the game is trying to sell. The visuals hold up reasonably well for a VR title of its vintage. Water effects and environmental audio - casting splashes, ambient nature sounds, the occasional fish breaking the surface - do the heavy lifting for immersion, and it largely works. Where the experience occasionally wobbles is in minor visual glitches and the gap between the polish of the flat-screen version and what made it into the VR build. If you already own the base game, the VR add-on route is the smarter entry point. This is a game that earns its Steam rating honestly. It isn't trying to be an action experience; it's a slow-burn sim that rewards patience and gear experimentation. Couch co-op fans, real-world anglers curious about virtual practice, and anyone who wants a genuinely low-stakes VR experience that isn't about rhythm or shooting will find a lot to like here. Just go in knowing the DLC roster is long and the reeling controls need some patience of their own.
