Blasphemous set the bar for grim pixel-art action, but There Is No Light trades that game's precision platforming for something blunter and angrier. You play a father hacking through a ruined underground world ruled by a death cult, and the combat is deliberately heavy: short-range swings, stiff dodges, and enemy weapons you pick up off corpses and use until they break. It is a hack-and-slash that wants you to commit to every attack. What lands is atmosphere and consequence. The art is bleak, the boss fights hit hard, and story choices genuinely fork toward different endings. What does not land is variety. Enemy patterns repeat, the middle stretch drags, and hitboxes can feel unfair in ways that read as jank rather than difficulty. If you want a punishing action game with a mean streak and a short runtime, it delivers. If you need Souls-like depth or build variety, look elsewhere.
