The Adventures of Fei Duanmu 端木斐异闻录
A quietly confident Chinese detective visual novel that earned its Very Positive rating the honest way: sharp puzzle design, genuine humor, and cases that actually make you think.

About The Adventures of Fei Duanmu 端木斐异闻录
I have a soft spot for small studios that build an entire world out of a single protagonist and a cup of coffee, and Fei Duanmu is exactly that kind of project. Solo-developed by 致意, this detective visual novel follows DUANMU Fei, a criminal investigation student who cannot seem to stop tripping over genuinely strange cases in his own city of Lianhai. The tone sits somewhere between a lighthearted mystery manga and a proper deduction game, and that balance is handled with more care than you might expect from something this modestly priced. The structure is anthology-style: discrete cases, each with its own hook. One opens on a viral urban legend about a hearse spotted at a gas station, asking you to untangle who staged it and why. Another builds around a serial falling-from-height case that turns surprisingly melancholy once you close in on the truth. The writing moves between comic and somber without feeling schizophrenic, which is genuinely hard to pull off. Puzzle minigames are woven into the investigation flow rather than bolted on as afterthoughts. They are not brutal, but they are real, and the game does expect you to pay attention to the evidence you collect. Multiple endings per case mean that sloppy saves can lock you out of resolutions you wanted, so keep that in mind and save often. Production values are modest by any studio standard, but intentionally so. Animated character sprites give the cast a little life, and the full Chinese voice acting lands with warmth and personality even if you are reading along in English. The English translation is functional and gets the job done, though it occasionally feels slightly mechanical in its phrasing. Japanese support is also present, which tells you something about the fanbase this found beyond its home market. The soundtrack does quiet, atmospheric work without demanding your attention, the kind of score that sets a mood and then steps back. Where the game asks for patience is in its pacing. The opening chapter takes its time establishing Fei as a character before the investigation mechanics fully open up. For readers accustomed to kinetic visual novels that move fast, the early rhythm might feel slow. I would argue the setup earns its place, but walk in knowing this is not an action-first experience. The DLC episodes, including the 非人之恋 and 深海魆蜮 chapters, extend the universe and have held similar approval ratings among players who returned for more, though the deep-sea DLC is currently only available in Chinese and Japanese. This is the kind of title that found its audience organically, across multiple language communities, without marketing muscle behind it. Over 1,700 Steam reviews sitting at 90 percent positive is not a gift, it is earned. If you want a detective story built with craft and personality, made by someone who clearly loves the mystery genre, Fei Duanmu will hold your attention for its full runtime and leave you wishing the next case was already translated.
