Stronghold: Warlords Special Edition

I've spent enough time with Stronghold's legacy to know what works: tight economies, clear siege mechanics, readable UI. Warlords ditches that formula for an overambitious campaign where you command AI warlords across maps that feel twice as large as they need to be. The core loop is there, gather resources, build defenses, manage peasants, but it's buried under menu navigation and a camera that fights you more than enemy siege engines do. The Metacritic 65 isn't a surprise; the game launched unfinished and patches have only papered over structural problems, not solved them. If you're here for traditional Stronghold gameplay, look elsewhere. The multiplayer skirmish mode is functional and the Steam Workshop support means modders might salvage something from this. But vanilla Warlords is a cautionary tale about expanding a series without understanding why the original formula resonated. Solo campaign is a slog, AI warlords are unreliable allies, and the whole thing feels like it needed another year of focused development before release.
