A WWII precision shooter set in North Africa where one perfectly timed X-Ray kill-cam shot will make you forget every rough edge in the game. Good solo, better with a co-op partner.

Sniper Elite III is a third-person tactical shooter developed and published by Rebellion, set in the North African theater of World War II. You play Karl Fairburne, an OSS sniper working to disrupt a Nazi super-weapons program across eight large, open-ended maps. The pitch is simple: patience, positioning, and one clean trigger pull. Everything else is scaffolding around that core loop, and the core loop is genuinely good. The sniping mechanics are the whole reason you are here. You account for bullet drop, breathing, hit location, and on the harder difficulty settings, wind. Mask your shot with a passing aircraft or a coughing generator and the satisfaction of the kill landing is real, even through a monitor. The X-Ray Kill Cam follows your round through bone and organ in slow motion and yes, it is grotesque, and yes, it is the thing you will show your friends. Custom difficulty sliders let you strip out the aim-assist reticle entirely and run full ballistics, which is the correct way to play if you have any self-respect. The maps themselves reward the tactical player: multiple approach routes, vertical sniper nests, optional secondary objectives scattered around, and the ability to loot bodies and shoot out vehicle fuel tanks for environmental kills. Now for the honest part. The AI is a mess. Enemies range from completely oblivious to suddenly omniscient with no logical middle ground, and the alert system can act like you are still being tracked when you are three rooms away in a tunnel with no sightlines. Competitive multiplayer was sparse at launch and is effectively dead now, so do not buy this expecting a ranked ladder. Co-op is the better call: the full campaign supports two players online, and the dedicated Overwatch mode, where one player snipes from elevation while the other moves at ground level completing objectives, is genuinely well-designed asymmetric co-op. Survival mode throws waves of Afrika Korps soldiers at you for score, which is a decent distraction. Just know that co-op can have connection issues that have persisted since launch and may require some firewall fiddling to get working reliably. The story is window dressing. Karl is a cipher with two lines and a rifle, the cutscenes are static images with narration, and the narrative urgency never shows up. That is fine. Nobody loads a Sniper Elite game for the writing. The visuals are dated even by 2014 standards, though the North African setting, with its warm light, open desert terrain, and canyon maps, gives the game a visual identity that the grey European stages of the earlier entries lacked. Performance on PC is stable at higher frame rates, which matters when you are trying to line up a 300-meter shot on a moving target. Bottom line: if you want a slow, deliberate shooter built entirely around the satisfaction of the long-range kill, SE3 delivers that better than most games with "sniper" in the title. Bring a friend for Overwatch mode, crank the ballistics to full, and accept that everything outside the scope is a bit janky. The series got more polished in later entries, but SE3 remains a solid entry point with enough open-level design to keep a weekend busy. Fred, Scout Team
