Compare Shogun: Total War - Collection prices across trusted key stores and find the best deal. Developed by CREATIVE ASSEMBLY. Published by Sega. Released on 6/13/2000. Available on PC. Genres: Action, Strategy. Metacritic score: 84/100.

The strategy game that invented the Total War formula, and it plays like a rough first draft. Worth it for history nerds and series completists, not newcomers.

The first hour is a wall. You get a stylized map of feudal Japan, a handful of provinces, an economy that barely explains itself, and a turn structure that expects you to already know what a daimyo does. Then a battle triggers, you drop into real-time command of ashigaru spearmen and cavalry, and half your army routs because you did not know morale collapses when a general dies. That friction is the actual game. Push through it and the campaign clicks into something genuinely tense: recruit, tax, marry, assassinate, and hold your borders long enough to march on Kyoto. What still holds up is the clarity. Rock-paper-scissors unit matchups, terrain that matters, and the raw satisfaction of flanking a larger force. What does not hold up is everything modern strategy players take for granted. The campaign layer is thin, the AI is exploitable, sieges are perfunctory, and the interface fights you constantly. The Mongol Invasion content adds a harder scenario worth playing once you know the systems. Play it as a piece of series history, not as a replacement for anything newer. Alex, Scout Team

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
