Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster

I went in expecting Persona 3 with demons instead of social links. What I got was a relentlessly bleak post-apocalypse where you play a half-demon protagonist navigating Tokyo's underworld, recruiting and fusing monsters to strengthen your team. The Demon Recruitment and Fusion systems are the real draw here, deep, explorable, genuinely satisfying once you stop fighting the UI. The four-way ending split is excellent, branching on actual ideological choices (Law, Chaos, Neutral, and one secret route) that reshape the endgame dramatically. But this remaster only polishes the visuals and adds a few quality-of-life tweaks. The pacing is glacial in stretches, random encounters are relentless, and the story assumes you've absorbed SMT's cosmology through osmosis. If you're chasing narrative payoff like you would in a Persona game, you'll bounce off the cryptic dialogue and philosophical abstraction. The writing doesn't reward rereads, it just obscures. It's a niche cult classic for a reason, and the HD coat of paint doesn't change that it demands patience and spreadsheet thinking.
