Shadowgate: MacVenture Series
A faithful resurrection of the 1987 point-and-click adventure that started it all, letting you replay Shadowgate on the systems where it first haunted Mac users.
GamerScout Verdict
For adventure purists willing to embrace a 1987 pace and puzzle philosophy; everyone else should try the modern remake first.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.
We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.

About Shadowgate: MacVenture Series
I approached this one expecting nostalgia bait, but what Zojoi's done here is restore something genuinely fragile. The original MacVenture Shadowgate and its Apple IIGS sibling represent the early DNA of adventure games before Sierra and LucasArts dominated the genre. You're exploring a gothic castle room by room, solving puzzles with objects you find, dying often, and learning through trial and error. The pacing is slow and methodical, which will test patience if you're used to modern UI handholding, but that constraint is the whole point. The interface is deliberate, the atmosphere (aided by sparse but effective audio) stays eerie, and the puzzle logic mostly holds together. This isn't a remaster with quality-of-life improvements. It's an emulation project wrapped in reverence, which means it plays exactly like it did in 1987, clunky save systems and all. If you've never experienced the original Shadowgate, you're sampling gaming archaeology. If you have, this is the cleanest way to revisit it. Just know upfront: there's no hand-holding, no quest markers, no fast travel. You will get stuck. You will die suddenly. And honestly, that's the experience.
