Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun
A hex wargame that demands you learn zones of control and morale math before it lets you win anything. Steep, dry, and quietly excellent once it clicks.
GamerScout Verdict
Worth it if you read wargame manuals for fun; skip it if you want a tutorial that teaches you how to think.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.
We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.

About Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun
This one wants your attention before it gives you anything. Roughly two hours of reading unit stats, understanding how zones of control lock a samurai unit in place, and learning that morale collapse decides more battles than raw damage. Only after that does the hex grid start looking like a system instead of a wall of numbers. Byzantine Games built a wargame in the old Slitherine tradition, released in 2016, and it makes no apology for the ramp. Button-mash your ashigaru into a fortified line and you will watch a stack rout before your general even reaches the flank. What holds up is the decision density. Terrain, facing, and unit quality all matter, and the Sengoku setting gives the clan politics some teeth rather than treating diplomacy as a menu. The included level editor is the underrated part, since the scenario community is what keeps a niche wargame alive years past release. The disappointments are the usual for this shelf: the tutorial explains buttons rather than reasoning, the presentation is functional at best, and multiplayer depends on finding the handful of people still playing. Come for the tactics, not the polish.
