River City Saga: Journey to the West

The store page promises River City's first roguelike built for solo play, and that framing is accurate in the most literal sense. This is a Kunio-kun brawler with run-based structure bolted on, casting the entire Journey to the West cast (Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, Tang Sanzang) as Kunio lookalikes marching toward Tianzhu. Where reality diverges from expectation is scope. If you came hoping for a deep roguelike with layered synergies, the loop here is simpler than the label suggests: fight, pick up upgrades, punch onward, die, repeat with slightly better numbers. The combat itself is the strong part, the same chunky, readable Kunio punch-and-throw feel that has held up for decades, and the comedy adventure tone stays consistently silly rather than trying to be reverent about the source myth. Who it is for: people who already like this series and want a single-player campaign that respects a controller and a couple of evenings. Who it is not for: anyone treating roguelikes as their main genre, since the run variety thins out well before the credits and there is no co-op to fall back on. Play it on a gamepad, expect a brawler first and a roguelike second, and you will have a good time.
