Red Dead Online
Rockstar built one of the most atmospheric open worlds ever made, then walked away from it. Worth your time if you know what you're getting into.

About Red Dead Online
I've spent enough hours in shooters to know when a game's PvP is the point and when it's just wallpaper. Red Dead Online sits firmly in the second category, and once you accept that, the game opens up in ways that most online sandboxes never manage. This is a slow, role-based, frontier-life simulator wearing a multiplayer skin, and it's genuinely good at being that thing. The core loop gives you a set of unlockable roles: Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner, Naturalist. Each has its own progression track and mission type. Bounty hunting sends you chasing wanted targets solo or with a posse of up to four, often ending in messy firefights where the third-person cover system and Dead Eye targeting do most of the heavy lifting. Trading has you running goods between camps and buyers while other players can intercept. Moonshining adds a base-building layer with a distillery you upgrade over time. None of these roles are mechanically deep by shooter standards, the TTK is on the slower end and the gunplay never reaches the tightness you get from a dedicated action game, but they hang together in a world that is genuinely stunning to move through. The elephant in the room is Rockstar's support history. Active development effectively ended in 2022, and the community has felt that silence hard. Lobbies are quieter than they used to be, and on PC specifically the hacker and modder problem is real enough that many regulars stick to solo or invite-only sessions to stay sane. Console players have a noticeably smoother experience on that front. The structured PvP modes like Free Roam Events and competitive showdowns exist, but if you came here for ranked shooter action with meaningful competitive integrity, you are in the wrong game. The netcode holds up for co-op sessions well enough, but do not expect Rockstar to patch anything that breaks tomorrow. What keeps people coming back, even now, is the world itself and the friends-group experience it enables. Running a moonshine delivery at night in the rain through Lemoyne with three friends who are actually talking to each other is a specific kind of fun that very few games replicate. The seasonal events still tick over occasionally, and the existing content is dense enough that a new player has dozens of hours of structured stuff before hitting the wall. Just go in with eyes open: this is a game in maintenance mode, built on bones from 2018, and the roadmap died years ago. Fred, Scout Team
