Railway Empire - France
The branching scenario here is the most politically flavored Railway Empire has gotten, and whether that hooks you depends entirely on how deep into the base game you already are.
GamerScout Verdict
Solid DLC for committed Railway Empire players, though newcomers should lock in the base game first before crossing the Channel.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

About Railway Empire - France
I have spent more hours than I should admit optimizing signal placement and station throughput across Railway Empire's DLC lineup, so when France dropped alongside the second major community update, I went in with calibrated expectations. What Gaming Minds delivered is a content pack that adds genuine scenario personality without rethinking the formula, which lands somewhere between reassuring and mildly frustrating depending on your mileage with the base game. The headline is the branching narrative in the "Into a New Time" scenario, set between 1874 and 1890 in the aftermath of Napoleon III's exile and the collapse of the French monarchy. That framing actually matters mechanically: you pick a side early, either throwing your rail network behind a militaristic general focused on border fortification, or siding with the minister of public works to rebuild infrastructure and fund the Eiffel Tower project. The two paths lock off different map regions and produce meaningfully different expansion sequences, so a second playthrough is not just cosmetically distinct. Starting in Le Mans and pushing toward Nantes, the early priority is getting Pastries and Pasties moving between the two cities, with Wine from a nearby vineyard layering in quickly. Note that Pasties require two raw materials to produce, which immediately pressures station space in a way the base game's Beer-and-Meat loop does not. The French map is well-sized and geographically honest: rivers cut inconvenient routes, bridge costs matter early, and the density of cities in the north versus the rural south creates real prioritization decisions. Signal management stays as demanding as ever. The community discussion boards are full of players untangling the same bottlenecks I hit: signal spacing that throttles throughput, express train quotas gating regional unlocks, and the late-game tension between growing individual cities and preventing competitor sprawl. Freight tasks are more forgiving than the passenger and mail objectives if you are chasing a high rating on Free Game mode, so new players should structure their starting conditions accordingly. The map also supports full Free Game and Sandbox modes, which is where this DLC earns most of its long-term value for veterans who want a French geography canvas without scenario constraints. The honest criticism is that France sits in the middle tier of Railway Empire DLCs when ranked by raw scenario ambition. The branching choice is the most interesting narrative device the series had tried up to that point, but the map itself does not introduce terrain complexity on the level of Crossing the Andes or the logistical puzzle density of Northern Europe. The 10 new historical locomotives are welcome additions for train roster completionists, and the 12 new tradable goods do shift the economic layer enough to feel fresh. The DLC arrived alongside a substantive base-game patch that improved balance across the board, so the full package at launch was stronger than the France content alone. For newcomers: the base Railway Empire's tutorial is imperfect, but France's "Into a New Time" scenario is actually rated among the more accessible in the extended lineup, with cheaper trains and no maintenance building costs in the early phase letting you expand aggressively before the money pressure tightens. If the base game's 83% Steam approval rate has you curious, this is not a bad second map to cut teeth on. Veterans who have exhausted Germany and Great Britain will find enough here to justify the time, even if France does not top the tier list.
