About Psycho Dream 「サイコドリーム」
The surreal art direction carries this one, and I mean that as a compliment. It's a short side-scrolling action game about diving into DMovies, a fictional entertainment medium young people are using to check out of reality permanently, and hauling a girl named Sayaka back out of one. You pick a character, you head right, and you carve through nightmare imagery that changes theme stage to stage. The mood does most of the heavy lifting. The combat is where it thins out. Attacks land with a stiffness that dates the design badly, enemies mostly wander into your swings, and the difficulty comes from cheap placement rather than anything you can outplay. This is a single-player evening, controller in hand, achievements ticking over, and it does not pretend otherwise. If you work through retro Japanese action catalogs for atmosphere and oddity, it earns its slot. If you want fights with teeth, keep scrolling.
