Prison Architect - Psych Ward: Warden's Edition
A prison-management sandbox where criminally insane inmates blow up every tidy system you build - and that's exactly the point. If you liked the base game, the Psych Ward content is the pressure-test your operation needed.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for management-sim fans who want their optimized prison torn apart by a new inmate class and rebuilt smarter.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

About Prison Architect - Psych Ward: Warden's Edition
I've color-coded a lot of management systems in my time, but Prison Architect's Psych Ward content genuinely threw out my neat intake spreadsheet within the first hour. The base game already asks you to juggle staffing rosters, contraband sweeps, gang dynamics, riot readiness, and a grant system that funds your expansion one milestone at a time. Psych Ward layers a separate inmate classification on top of all of it - the criminally insane - and their needs do not follow the same logic as your general population. You are not simply filling meters to keep them content. Several needs have to be held within a target range, which flips your usual optimization instincts upside down. The operational changes run deeper than a single new prisoner type. You need psychiatrists and orderlies on payroll, because your existing guards are functionally useless when a criminally insane prisoner is in crisis. That staffing overhead has real budget consequences. You also have to decide whether to integrate these inmates with general population or wall them off in a dedicated wing built from the new padded cells, flooring, and wall types the DLC adds. Both choices have downstream effects on your security posture, your staffing ratios, and how contraband moves through the facility - new items like Adrenaline Shots and Fountain Pen shanks enter the pool and create new interdiction headaches. The Warden's Edition also brings selectable wardens with distinct passive bonuses, so your strategic identity at the start of a run carries more weight than it did before. For newcomers wondering whether to start here: the base game's tutorial is patient enough that a first-timer can get up to speed without watching an hour of guides. The grant system effectively sequences your early construction, giving you funded objectives before you're swimming in free-build decisions. The complexity ceiling is high, but the on-ramp is gentler than most grand-strategy titles I cover. Psych Ward is not where I'd tell a complete beginner to focus on day one - get your first stable prison running before you accept criminally insane transfers - but it's not gated content that requires mastery to attempt. On the downside, Prison Architect's active development ended with the Sunset update in 2023, with the studio's attention moved toward a sequel still in development. That means no further official balance passes. The mod ecosystem through Steam Workshop picks up some of the slack - community mods add new grant chains, expand reform programs, tweak room functionality, and even overhaul the UI - but mod compatibility requires checking version notes carefully. The AI running your prisoners and staff is adequate rather than impressive; it makes egregious pathing mistakes often enough to remind you this is a simulation with seams. If you treat those seams as puzzles to design around rather than bugs to be fixed, the loop stays compelling well past the 100-hour mark.
