POSTAL Redux

POSTAL Redux is a top-down twin-stick shooter remake of the 1997 original, rebuilt in higher resolution and with tightened controls by the same studio, Running With Scissors, who made the first one. You play as The POSTAL Dude, a figure who has become shorthand for gaming controversy, but strip the reputation away and what you actually have is a stripped-back, almost meditative survival shooter. Each level drops you into an isometric environment and asks one thing: reach the exit without being swarmed to death. That is essentially the entire loop. The game earns its Very Positive Steam rating not because it is deep, but because it is honest about what it is. The controls feel clean for a twin-stick setup on PC, the pixel-to-HD visual overhaul preserves the bleak, washed-out atmosphere of the source material rather than sanitizing it, and the level design builds pressure steadily without padding. There is a kind of grim rhythm to clearing a stage, something almost hypnotic about holding a position while the world floods toward you. The soundtrack reinforces this. It is tense and sparse in a way that keeps your attention on the threat, not the furniture. Where it struggles is where most honest remakes of very old games struggle. The content is thin by contemporary standards. There are no meaningful weapon builds, no branching paths, no narrative depth worth analyzing. The dark humor and transgressive imagery that defined the original remain present, and depending on your tolerance for that register, they will read either as sharp provocation or as noise. The Metacritic score of 54 reflects critical indifference more than a broken product. Critics wanted something to analyze. What Running With Scissors delivered was a preservation job with better resolution and a handful of quality-of-life improvements. The audience for this is fairly specific. If you played the 1997 version and want to revisit it without fighting legacy software, this is the cleanest way to do that. If you are coming in fresh and enjoy short, focused arcade-style shooters where the tension lives in moment-to-moment positioning rather than progression systems, there is genuine satisfaction here. The game runs for a few hours and does not overstay its welcome, which I respect in a remake. It knows its size. I would not point someone here who needs systems to engage with between sessions, or who wants story beats to hang the action on. But for anyone who appreciates a small, intentional package that does not pretend to be more than it is, POSTAL Redux holds up. It is a competent, atmosphere-forward remake of something genuinely strange, and it carries that strangeness with a straight face.
