Compare Payday: The Heist prices across trusted key stores and find the best deal. Developed by OVERKILL - a Starbreeze Studio.. Published by Starbreeze Entertainment. Released on 10/20/2011. Available on PC. Genres: Action. Metacritic score: 76/100.

Four criminals, creepy clown masks, and a shrinking window to crack the vault before SWAT floods the room. Old but still sharp if you bring friends.

My first few hours with Payday: The Heist convinced me this game has no interest in holding your hand. You drop into a bank lobby with three other players, objectives start stacking up immediately, and the police response escalates fast enough that a plan falling apart feels genuinely chaotic rather than scripted. That tension is the product of a design philosophy that trusts players to coordinate rather than nudge them toward it with tutorials and waypoints. The heist selection is compact but deliberate. You get missions like a multi-stage bank robbery, a meth lab raid, a panic room assault, and a hostage rescue scenario, each built around a rhythm of moving fast, defending a position, and managing what goes wrong. The game leans on three classes - assault, sharpshooter, and support - which push each player toward a role without locking anyone into pure passivity. Enemies split into standard cops and tougher special units that can pin, flank, or suppress your crew if you ignore them, so situational awareness matters more than raw aim. Difficulty scaling is real: the jump from easy to the higher tiers is steep enough that casual crews will hit a wall, which is worth knowing upfront. The co-op is where this game earns its 93% Steam rating, but solo play with AI partners is serviceable if not exactly smooth. The bots fill their roles adequately, and the adjustable difficulty setting gives solo players some room to calibrate the experience. What the game cannot give you alone is the specific pleasure of a crew that communicates. A well-run heist where every bag gets secured and nobody trips the alarm prematurely is genuinely satisfying in a way that scripted action games rarely manage. The weaknesses are real and worth naming. The heist count is low compared to its sequel, and the game runs on the Diesel engine, which is not friendly to community-made content or modding. Visually it shows its 2011 age without apology. Ammo economy can feel punishing on higher difficulties, and some mission objectives require repetitive back-and-forth fetch logic that grates after enough repetitions. Anyone coming from Payday 2 will notice the feature gap immediately. For a player who has never touched the series, this is a clean, focused entry point that does one thing - tense co-op heisting - with real commitment. For someone returning to see where it all started, the lean map list and rough edges may frustrate more than they charm. Go in with a crew, accept the short runtime, and it delivers exactly what it promises. Alex, Scout Team

GamerScout Verdict

Best for squads who want focused co-op tension and can forgive a small map pool and 2011-era rough edges.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
