The Kingmaker season pass bundles extra story content and companions for one of the crunchiest, most punishing cRPGs in recent memory. Worth it if you're already hooked.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is Owlcat Games' adaptation of the tabletop Pathfinder ruleset into an isometric, party-based cRPG - and the Season Pass is the vehicle for getting all the additional story content, companions, and mechanical expansions that shipped after launch. If you bounced off the base game, nothing here will convert you. But if you're already neck-deep in the Stolen Lands and building a Sylvan Sorcerer with a pet bear, this is the natural way to extend that investment. The base game itself sits in a lineage that includes Baldur's Gate, Arcanum, and the old Fallout titles - slow, systems-heavy, and completely uninterested in holding your hand. The Season Pass content follows that same philosophy. The added DLC chapters, including "The Wildcards" which introduces the Tiefling companion Nok-Nok (genuinely one of the better-written companions in the game), "Varnhold's Lot" which lets you play a parallel story from a different faction's perspective, and "Beneath the Stolen Lands" which adds a roguelite endless dungeon mode, each scratch a different itch. Varnhold's Lot is the meatiest in terms of narrative payoff - it recontextualizes main-game events in ways that actually reward re-reads of your original playthrough. Beneath the Stolen Lands is mechanically interesting but the most disconnected from the main story, so manage expectations there. The Pathfinder ruleset translated into this format means build variety is genuinely deep - we're talking dozens of classes, archetypes within classes, feats that interact in ways that require spreadsheet thinking at higher difficulties. That complexity is a selling point or a dealbreaker depending on your tolerance. The kingdom management layer, love it or hate it, is present throughout and the DLC content weaves in and out of it. One honest caveat: the base game launched in a rough state, and while the Enhanced Plus Edition ironed out a lot, some jank persists. The Season Pass content was similarly patched post-launch, so playing this well after the initial release window is actually the right call. Who is this for? Players who want a cRPG that takes the tabletop ruleset seriously, who enjoy theorycrafting builds past hour 40, and who care about a world with genuine political texture - the Stolen Lands feel like a real contested frontier, not a theme park. Players who want streamlined storytelling or lighter systems should look elsewhere. The writing ranges from strong (companion arcs, Varnhold's Lot) to workmanlike (some of the side quests are padding, full stop), but the highs are high enough that the filler is forgivable. Bottom line on the Season Pass specifically: it is not a mandatory purchase before finishing the base game, but Varnhold's Lot in particular is worth it for anyone who makes it to the mid-game and wants more story. Pick it up when you're certain the base game has its hooks in you. Monika, Scout Team

Buy the Season Pass only after the base game has you - Varnhold's Lot alone justifies it for committed Kingmaker players.
