About Painkiller: Recurring Evil
I spent a couple hours with Recurring Evil expecting the Painkiller legacy to carry it. Instead, this is a forgettable corridor blaster that throws waves of generic demons at you with all the strategy of a broken piñata. The level design is flat, enemy variety is thin, and the weapons lack any real punch or feedback. It's the kind of game that feels like it was assembled from leftover assets rather than designed with any clear vision. The Metacritic 38 isn't a fluke. This isn't "so bad it's fun" or "a hidden gem" - it's just ineffectual. If you've got nostalgia for the original Painkiller's fast-paced mayhem, this will disappoint you. If you're hunting for a cheap shooter, there are dozens of better options in its price range, even from 2012.
