NOSTOI
A solo-dev puzzle platformer that wraps physics and time puzzles inside a boy's fractured psyche - short, contemplative, and surprisingly sincere about what it's trying to say.

About NOSTOI
I have a soft spot for the kind of game that a single person clearly poured themselves into and then quietly released into the void. NOSTOI is exactly that: a 3D puzzle platformer built by one developer under the Aasura Project banner, released in 2018 with almost no fanfare and a handful of Steam reviews to show for it. That obscurity does it a disservice, because there is genuine intention here. The structure is level-by-level, each stage its own isolated "land" inside what the game frames as a psychological limbo. The central mechanic revolves around Time Obelisks - objects scattered through each environment that, when activated, revert specific objects back to their original positions. Reconstruct a collapsed staircase, nudge blocks back to unlock a path, sneak through a guarded section without triggering a reset - the puzzle variety is modest but real. Each land also has its own custom physics quirks, so reading the environment carefully before acting is the actual skill being tested. There are ally characters tucked into each stage who offer both story fragments and hints, which keeps the pacing from ever feeling cruel. The visual presentation leans into a cel-shaded, chibi aesthetic - a stylistic choice that cuts against the heavier psychological subject matter in a way that either charms you immediately or puts you off. I find it disarming in the right way. The story threads through concepts like false memory and the way trauma reshapes perception, and while it never reaches the narrative density of something like Celeste, the thematic intentions are sincere and consistent. This is not a game that mistakes bleakness for depth - it stays calm throughout. What works against it is the scope. This is a sub-five-hour experience with almost no community presence, no critical coverage, and rough edges that a solo dev with a bigger team might have sanded down. The production polish is what you would expect from a one-person 2018 indie on a tight budget. If you arrive expecting a fully realised story with a resonant ending, you may feel it falls just short. If you arrive as someone who appreciates a small, earnest thing trying to do something thoughtful with physics puzzles and a quiet emotional register, the shortness starts to feel appropriate rather than limiting. NOSTOI is not a hidden masterpiece. It is a handmade object with a specific mood, built by someone who cared about every land they designed. For players who seek out exactly that kind of work, the asking price is almost nothing and the atmosphere lingers longer than the playtime suggests it should. Kai, Scout Team
