About Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Universe Pack - Season Pass (DLC)
I came into the Universe Pack with pretty measured expectations, because the base game it bolts onto had a famously rocky launch. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl shipped in late 2021 with solid platform-fighter mechanics - eight-directional air dashing, wavedashing, rollback netcode for online play - but critics and players were quick to point out how thin the content was at launch: no voice acting, a barebones arcade mode, no items, and a player base that quietly dried up within weeks. By the time this season pass appeared in May 2022, Ludosity had already patched in voice acting, items that toggle on in casual matches, and a couple of free fighters (Garfield and Shredder). So the Universe Pack arrives into a game that is, at minimum, closer to what it should have been at launch. The pack itself brings three characters to the roster across a staggered rollout: Jenny Wakeman (XJ-9) from My Life as a Teenage Robot dropped on day one of the announcement, Hugh Neutron from Jimmy Neutron followed in August 2022, and Rocko from Rocko's Modern Life arrived in October 2022. Each fighter comes bundled with a unique stage and an alternate costume, which is a reasonable amount of content per character. Jenny in particular drew strong early attention - her moveset suits the kind of aggressive, fast-paced combat that Ludosity clearly built the game around, and fans of My Life as a Teenage Robot will recognize the personality baked into her animations. Hugh Neutron became something of a meme-powered community request before his inclusion, and the developers leaned into that excitement with a full reveal campaign. Rocko rounds out the trio as a nod to one of the network's older, more cult-favourite properties. The honest concern with this pack is context. The base game's player population on Xbox never fully recovered from the rough launch period, and a sequel - Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 - released in late 2023 with a roguelike campaign, crossplay, and a new season pass of its own. That sequel addressed many of the complaints that plagued the original, which makes spending money on first-game DLC feel like the less obvious move in 2025. If you and a group of friends are still active in the original and want a few fresh faces for local split-screen or online PvP sessions, Jenny, Hugh, and Rocko do add genuine variety. The platform-fighter mechanics underneath remain legitimately deep for anyone willing to spend time in training mode. But solo buyers looking for a meaty single-player reason to pick this up will not find it here. Bottom line: this is roster expansion content, nothing more. The three characters are well-designed relative to the base game's cast, the bonus stages add some welcome visual variety to the stage select screen, and the value of buying the bundle over purchasing characters individually is real. Just go in knowing you are buying more fighters for a game with a smaller online community than it once had, and weigh that honestly against whether the sequel might better serve your time.
