About Neptunia Virtual Stars - INSIDEChan Sisters Pack (DLC)
My honest reaction after digging into what this DLC actually delivers: it is a cosmetic and consumable top-up for a base game that was already dividing its audience right down the middle. Neptunia Virtual Stars sits at a Mixed 57% on Steam for a reason. The base game tries to blend a third-person shooter (when you control the four CPU Goddesses) with a hack-and-slash style (when you swap to the V-Idol characters), and critics consistently flagged that the two halves never fully click together. The Goddess combat loop largely amounts to circling enemies and holding the fire button, while the V-Idol melee side suffers from unresponsive dodging and an AI companion that does very little to help. Boss encounters add a rhythm-phase mechanic tied to the song's chorus, which sounds charming on paper, but in practice most players found they could just run laps around the arena until the health bar emptied. That is the game this DLC asks you to already own and enjoy. With that context established, here is exactly what the INSIDEChan Sisters Pack puts in your hands: fifty themed recovery items per VTuber in the group, three themed masks per VTuber, three themed accessories per VTuber, and a Special X Cube for each member, provided you have already rescued that character in the main story. There is no new story content, no new playable character, and no new stage. The X Cubes slot into the game's existing accessory and stat customisation layer, which is meaningful in the same limited way that any consumable booster is meaningful in a game that is not particularly punishing to begin with. The masks and accessories are purely cosmetic flourishes aimed at fans who want their roster dressed in INSIDEChan Sisters livery. The Neptunia series has always leaned hard on franchise loyalty and fan-service crossovers, and that approach works when the underlying game is strong enough to make you want to spend more time in it. Virtual Stars, unfortunately, is one of the weaker executions in the catalogue. The writing has its moments, particularly the fourth-wall jokes and the self-aware meta-commentary Neptune delivers as the supposed series protagonist, and the J-pop soundtrack is genuinely enjoyable. But the collect-a-thon structure late in the main game, the repetitive corridor levels, and the combat system that critics widely described as shallow mean that extra cosmetics do not address any of the reasons people bounced off it. If you are a completionist working through every VTuber pack Idea Factory International released alongside the PC version, this fits neatly into that project. If you are on the fence about the base game itself, no amount of themed recovery items will fix a combat loop that was already underbaked at launch. The INSIDEChan Sisters Pack is one of twenty VTuber crossover packs released simultaneously on PC in April 2021. At that scale, the packs feel more like a merch shelf than a content roadmap. For fans of the specific VTuber group who are already deep into the game, it is a low-cost affection token. For anyone else, it is the wrong end of the purchasing funnel. Monika, Scout Team
