Neptunia Virtual Stars

I went in hoping for the self-aware, character-driven writing that made the mainline Neptunia games worth revisiting. Instead, Virtual Stars is a music-based hack-and-slash where you team up with VTuber avatars to save Planet Emote from data corruption. The combat loop is serviceable: rhythmic button presses sync with soundtrack tracks to trigger special attacks, which sounds fresh on paper but becomes rote after the third dungeon. The real problem is the identity crisis. It's not a rhythm game with enough mechanical depth to stand on its own, and it's not an RPG where story or character arcs matter. The writing defaults to fan-service scenarios and self-referential industry in-jokes that land with a thud if you're not already parasocial with VTuber culture. Boss fights drag, side quests feel padded, and the narrative payoff never materializes. If you're hunting for Neptunia's signature humor and world-building, look elsewhere. This one's a niche tribute act that doesn't work even for the niche.
