I keep coming back to NBA 2K16 because it sits at a rare intersection: a sports sim that was genuinely ambitious about what a basketball game could do, not just how it could monetise you. Released in September 2015 and developed by Visual Concepts, it covers the 2015-2016 NBA season and arrived with three cover athletes - Stephen Curry, James Harden, and Anthony Davis - which tells you exactly where the league's energy was that year. On the court, it remains one of the sharpest-feeling entries the series has produced. The redesigned post game lets you back down defenders with the left trigger, passing was expanded to dedicate separate face buttons to lobs, bounce passes, and alley-oops, and the Pro Stick controls for jukes and fakes reward players who put the time in to learn them. Once those systems click, the flow of a half-court possession game feels genuinely authentic. The AI deserves a callout here. Teams run their actual play-sets, react to your defensive adjustments, and push in transition when you give them the lane. It makes every opponent feel distinct rather than just a difficulty slider in disguise. The player rating system was also overhauled to reduce inflated attributes, meaning elite players feel special in specific ways - Harden draws fouls the way Harden actually does, rather than being a generic all-around superstar. That attention to simulation detail is why the community still refers to 2K16 as a high-water mark for the franchise. Mode depth is genuinely impressive. MyGM puts you in charge of day-to-day franchise operations - ticket pricing, staff morale, roster construction, and even a full team relocation arc that requires convincing 16 of 30 owners to back your move. MyLeague lets you run a sandbox season and supports up to 29 other real players in an online franchise. MyTeam handles the card-collecting side. 2K Pro-Am, which debuted here, lets you run five-on-five games under full NBA rules using your created MyPlayer and even build custom courts and team branding. The soundtrack, curated by DJ Premier, DJ Mustard, and DJ Khaled, adds another layer of genuine personality. On PC specifically, early release builds had optimisation issues and crashes, though patches addressed most of them - worth knowing if you are running older hardware. The one real stumbling block is MyCareer's "Livin' Da Dream" campaign, written and directed by Spike Lee. The concept is interesting on paper: a cinematic story following a player nicknamed Frequency Vibrations from high school through the NBA draft. In practice, the narrative is linear to a fault. No matter how you customise your player's appearance, you are locked into a fixed Harlem-native backstory with no meaningful agency over the story beats. Reviewers and players alike found the cutscenes to swing between earnest and cringe-inducing, and the lack of player choice frustrated people who came expecting a role-playing career mode. It is not unplayable, but it is a drag when the rest of the game trusts you so much more as a player. As a PC purchase in 2025, context matters. The servers are well past their peak population, MyPark and online modes will feel sparse, and the roster reflects the 2015-16 season, so do not expect current lineups. What you do get is one of the deepest offline basketball experiences ever shipped - MyGM, MyLeague, and the core sim gameplay hold up remarkably well as a standalone product. If you care about on-court basketball mechanics more than live services and current rosters, this one earns its reputation.
