Juliet Starling's chainsaw-and-pompom zombie-slaying is finally back on modern hardware, and the B-movie campiness holds up better than the remaster's technical polish does.

My first few minutes with Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP felt like finding a weird old action figure in a box and discovering it still has all its parts. The 2012 original co-written by Suda51 and James Gunn was always a deliberately trashy, over-the-top hack-and-slash about cheerleader Juliet Starling dismembering zombies with a chainsaw while lugging around her boyfriend Nick's disembodied head on her skirt. RePOP brings that same unhinged energy to modern platforms, and for newcomers who never hunted down a 360 copy, the premise alone is worth experiencing at least once. The actual combat is snappier than it was in 2012. Dragami rebuilt the input buffering, tightened combo timing, and reworked the Chainsaw Blaster so it fires continuously rather than forcing a cock-and-reload every few shots. The new Chain Hit Hunting system speeds Juliet up as her combo streak climbs, which gives the fighting a rhythm that the original never quite nailed. You can vault over zombie heads, smack enemies with pompoms, and chain into a spinning chainsaw attack that reviewers widely flagged as bordering on too powerful. On top of the standard zombie fodder, the game's five Dark Purveyor boss fights each carry a distinct music-genre theme, from punk to death metal to psychedelic funk, and they remain the clear highlight of the seven-to-eight-hour runtime. Minigames like zombie baseball and a Pac-Man-style arcade section break things up across six levels, though a few of those diversions still interrupt the pacing in ways that feel jarring even after the balance tweaks. The version question is where it gets complicated. RePOP sits in an odd middle ground where it was rebuilt on Unreal Engine 5 but stopped short of being a true remake. Juliet's character model looks noticeably sharper, and the lighting gets a real upgrade, but zombie enemy models received far less attention and the contrast between the two is visible in almost every encounter. The original's cel-shaded pop-art flavor, including the comic-style character intros, is also gone, replaced with a cleaner but arguably less distinctive look. Most critically for fans of the original, nearly the entire licensed soundtrack was lost to expired contracts. The replacement compositions are serviceable but they do not carry the same punch, and that gap is felt most sharply during the combo-meter super-mode moments that used to hit differently with a specific famous pop track. There are also two modes to pick between. Original Mode keeps the blood and restored the tweaked gameplay. RePOP Mode swaps gore for fluorescent sparkles and colorful hit effects, an optional visual style that generated community controversy at launch but is genuinely harmless since it touches nothing else. Post-launch patches have addressed the worst of the launch bugs, restored several costumes that were missing at release, added a photo mode, and introduced dual audio. Steam user sentiment currently sits at a strong positive rating, suggesting the patched state is meaningfully better than day-one coverage reflects. Veteran players will notice what is missing. First-timers will mostly just find a short, loud, ridiculous action game that does exactly what it sets out to do and does not overstay its welcome. Alex, Scout Team

GamerScout Verdict

Worth picking up for newcomers to Juliet's chaos; returning fans should weigh the missing soundtrack against the improved combat feel.
