I approached Koumajou Remilia knowing it was a remake of a 13-year-old Touhou fangame, and that context matters: this is a love letter to bullet-hell aesthetics filtered through a Castlevania lens. You play Remilia Scarlet across seven stages of relentless side-scrolling action, where pattern recognition and frame-perfect inputs separate attempts from clears. The HD remaster smooths the pixel work without losing charm, and the handful of difficulty modes let you adjust the difficulty curve. What holds it back isn't the age of the original design, it's inconsistent pacing between stages and boss patterns that can feel unfairly telegraphed even on lower difficulties. The game knows what it is: a niche action platformer for Touhou devotees and Castlevania fans willing to trade narrative breadth for moment-to-moment challenge.
