Rico Rodriguez returns to his Mediterranean homeland with a grappling hook, a wingsuit, and absolutely no chill. The XXL Edition bundles the full game with all DLC so you start at maximum chaos.

Just Cause 3 is an open-world action sandbox set on the sun-drenched fictional island republic of Medici, a place ruled by the thoroughly hateable General Di Ravello and his heavily armed military machine. Your job, as returning series hero Rico Rodriguez, is to blow that machine into small pieces across a map that stretches over 400 square miles of coastline, mountains, and rolling countryside. There is a story holding the whole thing loosely together, but nobody is here for the narrative. The plot is thin, the villain is cartoonish, and the supporting characters are forgettable. That is not a complaint; it is just accurate framing. This game is about movement and destruction, and on those two fronts it genuinely excels. The core toolkit hands you a grappling hook you can use to tether enemies to fuel tanks, pull helicopters out of the sky, or pin a soldier to a wall, a parachute you can pop at any moment, and the wingsuit, which is the real star of the show. Chaining the grapple with the wingsuit and parachute lets Rico stay airborne indefinitely, and the momentum-based traversal across Medici's varied terrain is genuinely satisfying to master. A gear mod system sits underneath all of this, unlocking upgrades to Rico's tethers, weapons, vehicles, and physical resilience by scoring well in post-liberation challenges: wingsuit dives, vehicle races, destruction time trials, and weapon proficiency runs. It adds a light progression loop that keeps things from feeling completely aimless during the long stretches between story beats. The repetition problem is real, though. Liberating settlements means destroying a checklist of red-painted objects, and Medici has a lot of settlements. The structure forces you to clear a minimum number of provinces before story missions unlock, which means the open-world freedom is somewhat undermined by a mandatory grind. Scripted missions lean heavily on escort objectives that can fail due to bad AI rather than your own mistakes, and the driving mechanics are noticeably stiff compared to how fluid everything else feels. The online leaderboard system also has a history of interrupting gameplay with server reconnection popups, though playing offline sidesteps most of that friction. The XXL Edition is the complete package. It includes the base game plus the Air, Land and Sea Expansion Pass, which covers three full DLC campaigns: Sky Fortress (Bavarium-powered wingsuit that can fire weapons mid-air), Mech Land Assault (giant industrial mechs on a new island), and Bavarium Sea Heist (an underwater research base heist with the loochador rocket boat and lightning-summoning Eden Spark device). On top of that you get the Weaponized Vehicle Pack, the Explosive Weapon Pack, the Reaper Missile Mech, and the Kousava Rifle. If you are picking this up for the first time, the XXL bundle is the correct way to do it. The Sky Fortress DLC in particular meaningfully changes the wingsuit into an offensive weapon and is worth having from the start. If you need story depth, moral choices, or tight mission design, look elsewhere. But if you want a beautifully modelled open world that exists specifically so you can set it on fire from above with a rocket-powered wingsuit and a tethered chain of exploding vehicles, Just Cause 3 XXL is a hard game to beat on its own terms.
