Sixty hours into Humankind and I still haven't seen the same civilization twice. That's the pitch, and for 4X veterans hungry for something structurally different from Civ, it mostly lands.

I've spent enough turns in Humankind to know that its central idea is genuinely smart and that the execution is about seventy percent of the way there. The core hook: instead of locking you into one culture for the entire game, you choose a new one at each of six eras, from Neolithic wanderer all the way through to a Contemporary-age powerhouse. Each culture you adopt layers its bonuses and emblematic units onto your existing civilization, so the Egyptians you played in the Ancient era quietly persist as your Romans roll into the Classical period. The math on potential combinations is enormous, and that alone gives the game more build variety than most 4X titles manage across a whole franchise lifetime. The Definitive Edition bundles every released add-on, pushing the total culture roster from the base game's 60 up to 86. That includes the Together We Rule expansion, which added a dedicated diplomacy currency and a Diplomacy affinity, addressing one of the loudest early complaints: that the original AI was all stick and no carrot. Cultures of Africa, Latin America, and Oceania round out the selection with new wonders and independent peoples. If you missed the DLC rollout, this is the version to buy. Where Humankind earns real respect is its battle system. Tactical combat plays out on the actual hex map rather than an abstracted side screen. Armies unstack, terrain elevation matters, siege weapons have to be built on the spot, and multi-turn battles that span rivers and city districts can escalate into something that genuinely feels like a war rather than a dice roll. The Fame victory condition also deserves credit: every era advancement, wonder construction, and battlefield win feeds a single unified score, meaning you can be competitive without dominating any single axis. That creates a different late-game pressure profile than Civ's tech race or culture spam. The problems are real though, and the Mixed review score on Steam reflects them honestly. The AI can be erratic under pressure, particularly in the early Classical era where aggression spikes in ways that feel disconnected from the opponent's stated diplomatic stance. City management leans heavily mechanical, with stability meters and food ceilings that punish expansion in ways that are poorly telegraphed to new players. The Neolithic opener, a slow wander phase before you pick your first culture, adds an hour of low-stakes exploration that veterans will treat as a lobby timer. And while Amplitude's tutorial does a reasonable job explaining the era-transition system, the depth of district stacking and the finer points of influence pressure are things you will learn from failure, not the tooltip. Here's the thing I tell every spreadsheet-averse friend who bounces off the first session: Humankind's difficulty curve is front-loaded with friction, not complexity. The actual decision-making per turn, once you understand the era-selection screen and how emblematic units inherit across cultures, is more legible than a modern Paradox title and far more approachable than a full Endless Legend run. Set the game speed to a slower option, read the culture trait summaries before you commit, and the depth starts working for you rather than against you. If you do bounce off the default settings, that is a setup problem, not a system problem. Diego, Scout Team

GamerScout Verdict

Best for 4X veterans who want structural distance from Civilization and can tolerate an AI that occasionally forgets diplomacy exists.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
