I spent an evening with Horizon Shift '81 expecting a retro skin over modern design. Instead, Flump Studios built something that respects how arcade shmups actually played: patterns to read, waves that escalate, no hand-holding. You rotate your ship around the screen's perimeter, firing inward at incoming threats. The pixel art is clean without being cute, and the chiptune soundtrack sits perfectly in that space between pastiche and genuine craft. It's short-session design done right, no bloat, no narrative padding, just the core loop refined. Tate mode (vertical screen orientation) shows real respect for the arcade roots. The 78 Metacritic reflects solid, straightforward execution rather than reinvention, and that's exactly what this game is: an honest wave shooter for people who miss actual arcade challenge. If you want bullet-hell difficulty with old-school rhythm, this delivers.
