About Horizon: Forbidden West
Where The Witcher 3 sells you on writing and Breath of the Wild sells you on freedom, Forbidden West sells you on the fight itself. Every machine in the roster is a puzzle of armor plates, exposed components and elemental weaknesses, and stripping one apart with tearblast arrows before finishing it with whatever it dropped is genuinely the best ranged combat in any open-world game I've played. The traversal upgrades (glider, grapple, underwater sections) open the map up in ways the first game never managed, and the world itself is stunning even on modest PC hardware. Where it disappoints is everything around the combat. Aloy narrates puzzle solutions before you get a chance to think, side quests lean heavily on the standard follow-the-tracks loop, and the map fills up with icons faster than any of them earn your attention. The story is more competent than gripping. Come for the machines, skip about a third of the checklist, and you'll have a great time.
