Six sandbox playgrounds of creative murder, a Metacritic 82, and enough replayability to lose entire weekends, HITMAN 2 earns every hour you put in, solo or with a friend sniping from a hilltop.

I have a soft spot for games that reward patience, planning, and the occasional decision to dress as a flamingo mascot and beat someone with a wrench. HITMAN 2 is exactly that game, and after sinking time into every one of its six main locations, I can tell you it treats each map less like a mission and more like a puzzle box you get to crack in a dozen different ways. The core loop puts Agent 47 into large, dense sandbox environments, a roaring Formula 1 race in Miami, a crowded Mumbai slum, a quiet American suburb in Whittleton Creek, and asks you to eliminate two or three targets by any means necessary. Mission Stories act as optional breadcrumb trails pointing you toward specific assassination setups, which is a genuinely smart accessibility feature: follow them on your first run, then ditch the guidance on your second and discover what else the map is hiding. Disguises remain the heart of the experience, letting you blend into pit crews, medical staff, or security details to reach areas that would otherwise be impossible. On the highest Master difficulty, a sloppy kill can ruin the disguise you were counting on, blood will do that, which adds a satisfying layer of consequence. The accident kill system was also notably expanded here, with multiple ways to engineer the same "accidental" death depending on what you brought into the level. Replayability is where HITMAN 2 really separates itself from most action games. Each map has classic challenge runs, Silent Assassin, Suit Only, no witnesses, plus Escalation Contracts that progressively tighten the rules and Elusive Targets that give you exactly one shot, no retries. The latter genuinely changes the psychological weight of a mission in a way few games manage. On the multiplayer side: both Ghost Mode (a 1v1 race to five unnoticed kills against a parallel-instance opponent) and co-op Sniper Assassin (team up to clear a map from range using characters with different ammo types) are no longer online, as IO Interactive shut down the servers ahead of Hitman 3's launch. Sniper Assassin is still playable offline solo, but if the multiplayer tags brought you here expecting live co-op, be clear-eyed about what is and isn't available in 2024 and beyond. Custom Contracts mode, however, lets the community keep generating new targets indefinitely and has plenty of solo life left in it. The story is the weakest link by a fair margin. Presented through static comic-panel cutscenes rather than the animated sequences of the prior entry, the Providence conspiracy plot has the texture of background noise. Nobody picks up HITMAN 2 for the narrative and that's fine, but newcomers expecting a cinematic spy thriller will be surprised. Also worth noting for disk-space-conscious players: importing the Legacy Pack of HITMAN 2016 maps into the same install can push your footprint north of 100 GB, and some of those older levels show minor performance hiccups in crowded areas. If you have a friend who wants a chill co-op session in the traditional sense, HITMAN 2 is not a couch game and never was. It's a solo sandbox that rewards curiosity, replay, and a willingness to find out what happens when you lure a target near a gas canister. For players who like thinking through problems sideways and chasing challenge rankings, the depth here is genuinely impressive. The Metacritic 82 undersells how much playtime a committed player can extract from these maps. Riley, Scout Team
