About Hellphobia
I went in expecting either a cult gem or a cautionary tale, and Hellphobia lands somewhere in between. It's a scrappy indie action-horror title from 2017 that swings for atmosphere but doesn't quite land the punch. The core loop is straightforward: move, shoot, survive waves of enemies in tight spaces. The horror angle feels more like a coat of paint than a design philosophy, leaning on static visuals and simplistic monster spawns rather than genuine tension. What works is the modest scope: it knows what it is and doesn't overstay its welcome. The problems pile up in execution. Combat feels stiff, level design is repetitive, and there's not much here to justify replaying once you've seen what's on offer. This is a weekend project that made it to retail, not a hidden masterpiece. Worth a look if you're hunting obscure indie action games and have low expectations.
