Supernatural spaghetti-western tactics with a poker-fueled combat system and a genuinely weird story about a devil's bargain gone wrong.

Hard West 2 is a turn-based tactical RPG set in a gothic, folklore-soaked version of the American frontier. You're hunting a phantom train and the demon who hijacked your soul, leading a posse of morally flexible gunslingers through battles that owe more to XCOM than to Baldur's Gate, but with a card-game layer underneath that keeps every fight feeling like a high-stakes bluff. If you bounced off the original Hard West, this one is cleaner, meaner, and considerably more focused. The mechanical star here is the Bravado system. Land a kill, and your action points reset, which means a well-planned turn can cascade into a cinematic chain of headshots, flanks, and last-second dives behind cover. It rewards forward aggression over the cautious pot-shotting that defines most tactics games, and it means fights rarely drag. Layered on top of that is the poker hand mechanic: cards collected from fallen enemies form hands that grant passive buffs, so you're quietly managing a poker deck between engagements. It sounds fiddly but becomes second nature fast, and it gives the gear system a thematic bite that most strategy-RPGs never bother to attempt. The posse you recruit is small, maybe four or five characters in any given mission, but they're distinct enough to matter. Each brings a personal skill tree and a fistful of class-specific abilities, and the game does a decent job of sketching out who they are through brief but pointed dialogue. Don't expect BG3-levels of companion lore here. These are more archetype sketches than fully realized characters, and some of the writing in secondary missions goes slack in ways that suggest the budget ran dry before the script did. The main story, though, holds its own: the supernatural Western premise never winks too hard at itself, and the antagonist has genuine menace. What the game doesn't do well is variety over the long haul. Around the midpoint, mission structures start recycling familiar beats, and the world map connective tissue between major encounters is thin enough that the game sometimes feels like a highlight reel with short loading corridors between acts. There's no real RPG overworld to sink into, no town to linger in, no merchant to haggle with across multiple visits. If you're expecting rich systemic depth or sprawling side content, this is going to feel lean. It's more of a 12-to-15-hour tactical experience with RPG seasoning than a full genre hybrid. Still, within those limits, Hard West 2 does something rare: it builds a coherent aesthetic identity and makes the combat mechanics serve that identity directly. The Bravado chain is genuinely satisfying in a way that's hard to convey without playing it, and the poker system earns its place rather than sitting there as a cosmetic hook. For anyone who wants tactics that feel punchy and stylish without the 60-hour commitment of a full strategy RPG, this delivers a tight, focused package with enough character to stick in your memory past the credits.
