About Grimstar: Crystals are the New Oil!
I spent a few hours with Grimstar expecting a straightforward resource-management game, and that's mostly what I got. You're managing crystal extraction, base defense, and unit composition across a campaign tied to your character's obligation to a megacorporation. The real-time strategy layer is functional: build collectors, defend against attacks, balance income streams. The story hook about replacing your dead brother adds some narrative weight, though it never quite lands emotionally. What matters for strategy players: the economy loops work, unit variety exists, and individual mission objectives force you to adapt your approach rather than brute-force the same build order every time. The catch is the interface feels clunky for a 2025 title. Camera controls and unit selection lack the snappiness you'd expect even from indie RTS work. If you're hunting a low-key campaign-driven strategy game and you've already burned through your backlog of polished titles, Grimstar scratches that itch. Just don't expect it to dethrone anything.
