Gothic's brutal, faction-driven prison colony finally gets its modern comeback, and 89% of Steam reviewers agree it was worth the wait, even if it still bites back hard.

I went in expecting nostalgia bait and came out with bruised knuckles and a notebook full of NPC names. Gothic 1 Remake is the kind of action RPG that treats you like an adult in the worst possible way: it drops you, a nameless convict, into the penal colony of Khorinis with no map markers, no quest pointers, and no sympathy. That old-school hostility is the whole point, and Alkimia Interactive, a Barcelona studio founded specifically to rebuild this 2001 cult classic, understood the assignment well enough to earn an 89% positive rating across nearly 40,000 Steam reviews. The faction system is where the writing and the build variety actually converge in interesting ways. Three camps, three completely different power structures: the Old Camp runs on ore and muscle, the New Camp on rebellion and resentment, and the Swamp Camp on something considerably more herbal. Aligning with one shapes your skill trainers, your available quests, and the social fabric of who will talk to you versus who will try to cave your skull in. The world is expanded roughly 20 to 30 percent over the original, with Alkimia digging into cut content from Piranha Bytes' original archives and adding around 30 hours of new camp-specific quest content. For an RPG fan, that sentence is either thrilling or terrifying depending on your tolerance for fetch loops. The mid-to-late game does fall into a Camp-to-Cave-to-Camp rhythm that some players have found exhausting, and the lockpicking overhaul, a dense per-lock minigame replacing the original's skill-check system, has divided the community sharply. Combat got the most substantive redesign. Where the 2001 version let you kite enemies with floaty swings, the remake demands deliberate timing and positioning from the first wolf you attempt to fight and immediately regret. Your character genuinely feels weak early, which makes the Learning Points and skill trainer progression curve land with satisfying weight as you improve. The system rewards patience rather than reflexes alone, and watching your Nameless Hero go from getting mugged outside the Old Camp gate to holding his own against the colony's nastier residents is one of the better-paced power progressions I have seen in recent RPGs. Alkimia did patch several well-known progression shortcuts from the original to close off easy economy exploits, which veterans will feel immediately. Technically the game launched with stability rough spots, but post-release patches have addressed the worst of them. Built on Unreal Engine 5 with over 600 unique NPC faces and a world that uses daily schedules to make the colony feel lived-in rather than staged, this is a game that looks and sounds like it has earned its budget. Composer Kai Rosenkranz, who scored the original, returned for the remake, and it shows in how cohesive the atmosphere feels. The dialogue is gritty and character-driven, and the writing largely avoids the plot holes present in the original by working from Piranha Bytes' own unrealised archive material. If you bounced off Kingdom Come: Deliverance for being too unforgiving, Gothic 1 Remake will genuinely make that game look like a tutorial. But if you have been waiting for an RPG that respects your ability to read a room, talk to every drunk in a camp, and slowly figure out who actually holds power in a society built on forced labor and dark magic, this is exactly that. The filler quest rhythm in later chapters is real and worth knowing about before you sit down. Start on a weekend you can afford to lose. Monika, Scout Team

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
