Gears Of War 4 (Xbox One)

I went in expecting pure spectacle, and Gears 4 delivers that in spades - the cover system still feels tactile and rewarding, the lancer's chainsaw bayonet never gets old, and cooperative campaign play is genuinely fun. The story balances earnest character development with absurd action setpieces, and it doesn't take itself so seriously that it forgets to let you blow up grotesque aliens. The campaign is substantial and paced well across a few hours. Where it stumbles: multiplayer can feel dated even for 2016, and if you're playing solo, the game occasionally demands you lean hard on instant-death restarting rather than clever play. Still, the core campaign is exactly what you want from a Gears game - tight gunplay, satisfying gore physics, and a story that knows when to get out of the way. Worth your time if you like third-person shooters with weight and personality.
