Take the dugout in Sports Interactive's most dressing-room-aware FM yet. Dynamics, a rebuilt 3D engine, and a revamped scouting system make FM 2018 the deepest entry in the series at its launch window.

Football Manager 2018 is a PC-only management simulation where you pick any club from a database of over 700,000 players and staff, then spend an embarrassingly large number of hours negotiating contracts, planning tactics, arguing with sports scientists, and obsessing over wonderkids you'll never actually sign. It is not a game you pick up for twenty minutes. It is a game that causes you to look up and realize it is 3 AM on a Tuesday. Know that going in. The headline addition this year is Dynamics, a three-pillar system built around Match Cohesion, Dressing Room Atmosphere, and Managerial Support. A Hierarchy screen shows your squad in a pyramid ranked by influence, Social Groups cluster players by nationality and personal bonds, and a Happiness screen gives you a per-player breakdown of their mood with club life. Sell a popular veteran without managing the fallout and you can lose the dressing room fast. It sounds like extra busywork, but in practice it makes long-term saves feel meaningfully different from previous entries, because squad harmony now actively feeds into on-pitch results rather than just sitting in a menu you ignore. On matchday, the 3D engine got a proper overhaul with new motion capture animations and DirectX 11 support, co-developed with Creative Assembly. It is still not pretty by modern standards, and some animations remain janky, but it is a genuine step up. More useful day-to-day is the new in-game tactical overlay that lets you issue shouts and make formation tweaks with the action still running. The tactics screen itself is less cluttered than before, and new player roles like the Carrilero and Mezzala give you more vocabulary when building a system. Pre-match briefings and deeper individual player instructions are also new additions that give you more levers to pull before kickoff. The Medical Centre is another new module worth your time: it identifies injury causes by player rather than just telling you someone pulled a hamstring, which helps you adjust training loads intelligently. Scouting has been overhauled too, now structured around investable packages that cost real transfer budget, which is realistic but jarring if you are used to the old system. Here is the honest part: FM 2018 is still a game of menus, spreadsheets, and text walls. Roughly 95 percent of your session is spent reading data, not watching football. The UI adds new sections every year and the result can be overwhelming, especially for newcomers. There is no split-screen, no couch multiplayer, no controller support worth mentioning. This is strictly a keyboard-and-mouse solo or online multiplayer experience. The Hotseat multiplayer mode is there for league-with-mates setups but it is asynchronous, not a Saturday night pile-on. If you want something to pass around a controller with four friends, this is not your game. If you want to lose a fortnight building a 4-3-3 gegenpress with a League Two side and argue about it in a group chat for months, FM 2018 absolutely has you. One note for anyone deciding between this and a newer entry in the series: the player database reflects the 2017-18 season, so rosters are now historically dated. Community database updates exist and are easy to apply, but the live-season feel of playing FM in its launch window is gone. That is not a dealbreaker for the core experience, but it is worth knowing. Riley, Scout Team

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
