The closest FIFA has come to a complete package in years, though how much that matters in 2025 depends entirely on your tolerance for EA's annual cycle.

I've gone back to FIFA 18 more than once since its 2017 launch, and each time what strikes me first is how much it got right after the slightly stiff FIFA 17. The big engineering shift here was Real Player Motion Technology, which made individual stars actually move like themselves on the pitch. Messi glides differently to a hulking centre-back, and that distinction bleeds into how every match plays out tactically. It is not a revolution, but it is a meaningful course correction. On the pitch, the changes are tangible if not dramatic. The crossing system was rebuilt into a three-height setup: a driven ground cross with RB/R1, a floaty delivery with LB/L1, and a standard whipped ball behind the defence. Shots carry noticeably more weight than FIFA 17, making volleys into the top corner a genuine thrill rather than a lucky accident. AI teammates make smarter support runs, and first-touch control keeps the ball tighter in the final third, opening up driven passes as a real option. The flip side is that defending can feel like a grind. Slide tackles are unreliable, the best defensive play is staying on your feet and waiting, and the AI's defensive positioning occasionally collapses in ways that are hard to explain. Passing also still floats on long balls and chipped through-balls more than it should. Outside of the core match experience, FIFA 18 stacks up an impressive list of things to do. The Journey: Hunter Returns picks up Alex Hunter's story for a second season, letting you steer him toward clubs like Bayern Munich, PSG, Atletico Madrid, or LA Galaxy, with branching decisions that affect his career path and a cast of real-world player cameos. The celebrity appearances are uneven in quality, but the core story holds together better than in the first installment. Career Mode got a visual facelift in transfer negotiations, with actual cutscenes replacing the old text menus when you sit down to negotiate wages and contracts. Ultimate Team added Squad Battles, a solo-friendly mode where you pit your FUT lineup against AI-controlled squads to climb leaderboards, which gave non-competitive players a proper reason to engage with FUT without queuing online. Pro Seasons, Co-Op Seasons, and the FUT Draft round out a roster of modes that could honestly keep a dedicated football fan busy for months. The honest caveat in 2025 is context. FIFA 18 is several entries behind the current series, and online infrastructure for older titles in EA's lineup tends to thin out over time, which matters most for FUT and Seasons. If you are after the richest online community or the most current squads and player ratings, a newer entry makes more practical sense. But for anyone who wants a genuinely solid football game with a campaign-style story mode, deep career management, and the best presentation EA had mustered up to that point, FIFA 18 holds up better than the annual-release stigma suggests. The gameplay foundation is confident, the atmosphere inside stadiums is excellent, and the breadth of modes means there is something here whether you prefer playing alone, with friends locally, or grinding FUT.
