Nineteen factions, 76 army lists, and four centuries of Dark Ages warfare packed into a DLC that earns every hour you give it, provided you already own the base game.

I have a colour-coded spreadsheet tracking which Field of Glory II DLC shifts the tactical meta most dramatically, and Wolves at the Gate sits near the top. The reason is the era it covers. Moving the timeline forward from the late Roman period all the way to 1040 AD forces you to rethink assumptions baked in by earlier packs. The mounted-archer dominance that defines Age of Belisarius gives way here to a grittier, more infantry-centric style of warfare, where grinding shieldwall lines and shock cavalry hit different from anything the earlier Roman-era content throws at you. The content volume is substantial and specific enough to matter. Nineteen new named factions arrive, covering a sweep from Andalusians and Fatimids across to Khazars, Pechenegs, Rus, and Vikings. That breadth sounds like padding on paper, but Byzantine Games has done the research: the Arabs alone carry twelve distinct army lists representing different phases of their expansion, while the Byzantines have six and the Vikings four, each list tuned to a historical moment rather than a generic roster. Fifty-five new units accompany those lists, ranging from Huscarls and Berserkers for the Viking player to Byzantine Skutatoi and the elite Varangian Guard. On the scenario side, six Epic Battles and 74 Quick Battles all run dual-sided, so every engagement has at least two distinct strategic puzzles inside it. The Allies feature introduced alongside this expansion deserves a separate mention because it quietly changes how the Custom Battles and Sandbox Campaign modules work across the entire game, not just this period. You can now draw composite army lists that blend a main faction with a historical ally, which opens up army-building combinations that were impossible before. Combined with the expanded pool of 281 total army lists when you own the full DLC chain, the replay ceiling climbs considerably. The six historical campaigns cover the Arab Conquest and the rise of Charlemagne among other flashpoints, though it is worth noting these are scripted, linear campaigns rather than open-ended strategic layers, so grand-strategy players expecting a Paradox-style dynamic map will not find one here. The honest caveats: this is an expansion, not a standalone, and it assumes competence with Field of Glory II's turn-based tactical system. The base game's tutorial is solid enough that a newcomer who commits a few hours to it will be ready to handle this content, but skipping that homework before jumping into a Viking shieldwall against Anglo-Saxon infantry at Ashdown will hurt. The small review sample on Steam, while unanimously positive, is also a reminder this remains a niche within a niche. The accompanying engine update that shipped with this DLC, carrying unit cost rebalances, AI fixes, swamp terrain, and over twenty bug corrections, adds genuine value across the whole game, which is the kind of developer practice that builds long-term trust in a live DLC series. Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
