Field of Glory II Medieval transplants the logic of Richard Bodley Scott's tabletop system into turn-based combat across the High Middle Ages (1040-1270 AD). This is pure tactical depth: terrain modifiers, morale cascades, and unit cohesion matter more than army size. Each faction plays distinctly, Heavy cavalry dominates frontal assaults while foot archers need elevation and cover. The AI doesn't cheat, which means you'll actually learn why your flank collapsed instead than blaming rubber-band difficulty. Campaign mode is thin, so this lives or dies on skirmish replayability and multiplayer. If you're the type to test formations for an hour before committing to battle, the 75 Metacritic score undersells it. Newcomers should start on smaller maps to grasp unit interactions without overwhelming themselves. The mod ecosystem is modest but functional. Best for grognards who think Crusader Kings is too soft and want pure medieval combat math.
