Field of Glory II: Age of Belisarius
A late-antiquity tactical wargame where cavalry doctrine actually shifts under your feet, and the AI punishes you for treating cataphracts like heavy infantry.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for tactical wargamers who already own Field of Glory II and want the cavalry-driven Byzantine transition modelled properly.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

About Field of Glory II: Age of Belisarius
Total War: Attila covers roughly the same collapsing world, but where that game buries battles under a campaign map and a fatigue slider, Age of Belisarius strips everything back to the tactical layer and asks whether you can actually read a battle line. This is Field of Glory II's engine pushed forward from 476 AD to 600 AD, the stretch where the Eastern Roman army stopped being an infantry force and rebuilt itself around cavalry to answer the threats on every border. That transformation is the whole design thesis. Your unit roster changes character across the period, and if you keep deploying like a fourth-century legion commander you will get ridden down. The tactical AI is the reason to buy in. It probes flanks, refuses engagements it cannot win, and exploits bad terrain choices rather than walking into your prepared line. Single battles, a campaign layer, and multiplayer are all here, plus split-screen. The tutorial does the job for newcomers, though the deeper systems (unit quality, cohesion states, impact versus melee phases) you learn by losing. The catch is scope: this is DLC-shaped content, so you want the base game and ideally the wider Field of Glory II library before it earns its place.
