Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection

I went in expecting a nostalgia trip and got a reminder that Etrian Odyssey's appeal was always niche. This collection bundles the first three games, each a first-person dungeon crawler where you draw maps on a grid, manage a custom party of five adventurers, and grind to survive. The grid-based combat is turn-based and strategic; the satisfaction comes from finally clearing a floor after three failed runs and learning enemy tells. If you're comfortable with permadeath, negotiating resource scarcity, and treating exploration as a puzzle, this hits. If you expect accessibility or hand-holding, the difficulty will feel punishing rather than fair. The three games feel dated by modern standards, but they're complete and playable. Not for everyone, but loyal fans of the series will recognize exactly what they're paying for.
