About Enigmatis 2: The Mists of Ravenwood
I'll be straight with you: I went into this expecting a checkbox hidden-object game and came out genuinely surprised by how well it holds together as a small thriller. Enigmatis 2 puts you in the shoes of a female detective tracking a demonic preacher into Ravenwood Park, a fogged-over nature preserve where a family has gone missing and something enormous has shredded a campervan to ribbons. That setup turns out to be the game's biggest asset - the story has a grip that most casual puzzle games don't bother to develop. The core loop is classic hidden-object adventure: move through hand-painted 2D screens, collect inventory items, clear obstacles, and repeat. What separates this from the genre average is the variety of what it asks you to do. Hidden-object scenes come in multiple flavours - straightforward word-list hunts, silhouette matching, and interactive chain puzzles where you use found items on other items to extract the thing you actually need. If you hate HOG scenes outright, you can swap any of them for a card-matching minigame instead, which is a sensible escape hatch. Sitting alongside all of this is an evidence board where you pin clues and piece together the case - it is not taxing, but it makes the detective framing feel earned rather than decorative. There is also a rechargeable hint system and a fast-travel map, so the backtracking problem that plagued the first game is largely solved here. The puzzles themselves run from lock-and-key logic problems to wiring challenges to more abstract pattern work. None will stump a seasoned puzzler for long, and a few have instructions that are less clear than they should be, but the pacing is good enough that the difficulty ceiling rarely feels like a ceiling at all. One community favourite: assembling a makeshift tranquiliser gun from scattered parts to deal with a bear blocking the path - small moments like that give the game a personality its genre siblings often lack. The handpainted environments lean into a purple-hued supernatural mist aesthetic that holds up well, and the score suits the atmosphere. The weak links are the cutscene animations, which look noticeably budget, and the voice acting, which oscillates between serviceable and rough depending on the character. Runtime sits around two to three hours for the main story, with a bonus chapter that adds context and a bit more playtime. That is short, and if you burn through puzzles quickly it can feel thinner still. This is also, clearly and without apology, a casual game - there is no fail state to speak of and the tension is inferred rather than real. Players who want friction or consequence should look elsewhere. But for anyone who wants to spend a quiet evening on a light supernatural mystery with genuinely varied puzzle design, this is one of the better examples of what Artifex Mundi can produce.
