Shadows adds a full espionage layer to Endless Legend, letting you build spy networks, steal tech, and sabotage rivals in this already deep 4X fantasy.

Endless Legend - Shadows is a DLC expansion for Amplitude Studios' turn-based 4X strategy game set on the dying world of Auriga. If the base game gave you diplomacy, war, and city-building, Shadows sneaks a fifth pillar into the mix: covert operations. This is the expansion for players who wanted to win wars before they started, using information and sabotage rather than stacked armies. The headlining addition is the Infiltration system. Each faction gets access to a new Hero class, the Spy, who can be embedded into rival cities to gather intelligence, steal technologies, sabotage districts, incite unrest, or even assassinate enemy heroes. The mechanic has real teeth. Counter-espionage matters, detection is a genuine risk, and getting caught has diplomatic consequences. For a genre that usually reduces backstabbing to a diplomacy-screen slider, Shadows does something meaningfully different. Watching a carefully planted spy unravel an opponent's research queue two turns before they would have locked in a crucial tech feels genuinely satisfying in a way that bombardment rarely does. The expansion also introduces the Forgotten as a new playable faction, built entirely around this espionage identity. They are weaker in conventional military terms but can project influence and chaos across the map in ways other factions cannot match. Their asymmetric playstyle is one of the more interesting faction designs in the full Endless Legend package, rewarding patience and map-reading over brute production curves. If you like playing civilizations that operate differently from the standard expand-and-conquer loop, the Forgotten are worth the price of admission on their own. That said, Shadows is not a complete reinvention. The espionage layer, clever as it is, can feel thin against factions with strong late-game military snowballs. Spying slows opponents down but rarely stops them, and in longer games you will still eventually fight the same decisive stack battles the base game revolves around. Players expecting Crusader Kings-level intrigue depth may find the system satisfying for a dozen turns and then slightly repetitive. The Hero progression for Spies is also narrower than for military or governor heroes, which limits how much build variety the class offers past the mid-game. Filler, in other words, is not entirely absent. For anyone already invested in Endless Legend, Shadows slots in cleanly and adds enough texture to justify replaying factions you have already completed. The covert options open new win conditions, create genuine tension on the map-reading layer, and give the game a dimension it was noticeably missing. Coming in as a pure newcomer, start with the base game first, but Shadows should be on your list shortly after. Monika, Scout Team

Solid expansion for Endless Legend fans who want intrigue alongside conquest, though the spy layer runs shallow in the late game.
