FC 26's Ultimate Team has picked up some genuinely useful structural changes. The old Playoffs grind between Division Rivals and FUT Champions has been scrapped entirely. Now you qualify for Champs directly through your Division Rivals rank and accumulated Qualification Points. Bounties let you attach specific reward objectives to upcoming Rivals matches, so even a bad session earns something. Gauntlets, a five-match format requiring five different squads, add real squad-depth pressure that makes the card economy feel relevant. Competitive preset, the mode used for all FUT head-to-head play, brings fewer auto-tackles, faster passing lanes, and smarter goalkeeper rebounds, which shifts more match outcomes toward player decision-making rather than engine autopilot. Those are welcome fixes. The online experience is improved over FC 25, though Competitive matches still heavily favour the attacking team, and keeping a clean sheet remains closer to a miracle than a skill expression. The elephant in the room is value. FC Points accelerate a grind that EA also sells you the long way around through coins and free objectives. Repeatable Evolutions are new this year and give lower-rated cards a genuine upgrade path, which slightly reduces the pressure to whale on packs for top-tier players. Goalkeeper Evolutions are available for the first time, which is a meaningful addition for anyone building around a specific keeper. Whether that justifies spending real money is a personal call, but the mode is at least more functional and fairer in 2026 than it was in 2025. User scores on Metacritic sit at a brutal 2.9, largely driven by frustration with the monetisation model and inconsistent AI patches, so community sentiment is split hard between FUT diehards who are reasonably happy and everyone else. If you are already deep in FUT and know what you want from a points purchase, the infrastructure around those purchases is at least more polished this year.
