Dwarfs!?
A chaotic dwarf-mining sim where your only real job is delaying the inevitable collapse. Surprisingly tense, surprisingly short on depth.

About Dwarfs!?
Dwarfs!? is a real-time strategy-adjacent arcade sim developed by Power of 2 and published by Tripwire Interactive. The core loop is deceptively simple: your dwarfs tunnel autonomously through an underground map, and your job is to manage the chaos that follows. Blocked tunnels flood with lava or water, monsters swarm through unguarded passages, and your gold reserves either grow or evaporate depending on how well you plug the leaks. It sits somewhere between a tower-defense game and a management sim, though it commits fully to neither. Think of it as a reactive puzzle where the board is constantly redrawing itself. For a strategy specialist, the decision density here is lower than you might hope. The upgrade tree is slim, the build options are limited to a handful of tunnel-blocking and reinforcement choices, and the AI dwarfs operate on rules so simple you will decode them inside your first run. There is no late-game complexity arc, no unit composition to optimize, no faction asymmetry to study. What the game does have is a scrappy escalation curve: early minutes feel manageable, then two water floods and a goblin breach hit simultaneously and suddenly you are triage-managing four crises at once. That tension is real, and it carries the experience for a while. Now, is this beginner-friendly? Genuinely, yes, more than most strategy titles of any era. The interface is minimal, the feedback is immediate and visual, and failure states are fast and readable. There is no 80-page wiki you need to pre-read. If you have a friend or younger sibling who keeps bouncing off RTS games because of build-order anxiety, Dwarfs!? gives them the satisfaction of strategic decision-making without the prerequisite knowledge cliff. Sessions run short, restarts are instant, and the core mechanic clicks within two attempts. For that specific use case, the low complexity is a feature, not a bug. The honest issues are longevity and polish. Mixed reviews on Steam (78% positive across roughly 1,000 ratings) reflect a game that wins its first hour and overstays its welcome by hour three. The map variety is thin, the soundtrack loops aggressively, and there is no meaningful mod ecosystem to extend the experience. The survival mode and score-attack framing give you a target to chase, but the mechanical ceiling is low enough that experienced players hit it fast. Multiplayer or co-op hooks that could have extended the replayability simply are not here. Once you have internalized the priority order for crisis management, the game runs on autopilot in your head even as it demands your hands. Bottom line from a strategy-focused perspective: Dwarfs!? is a competent, occasionally frantic little arcade sim that respects your time precisely because it does not demand much of it. It is not the game you load up when you want to feel clever, but it is the game you load up when you have 45 minutes, a coffee, and a low tolerance for tutorial bloat. The depth simply is not there for long-term engagement, and the mod community never materialized to compensate. Approach it as a palate cleanser between heavier titles, not as a main course.
