Play the villain building underground death-traps, but expect more rough edges than evil genius moments in this older dungeon-keeper-lite DLC.

Dungeons - Into the Dark is a DLC expansion for Realmforge Studios' 2011 dungeon-management title, casting you as a Dungeon Lord whose sole job is constructing labyrinthine underground lairs and luring heroes to their doom. If the premise sounds like a spiritual cousin to Bullfrog's classic Dungeon Keeper, you are not wrong to make that connection, but the execution lands at a considerably lower altitude. The core loop involves placing rooms, spawning monsters across 15 different creature types, and watching ten distinct hero classes wander in to get chewed up, with the whole thing framed around resource extraction and dungeon expansion. On paper, the villain fantasy is compelling. In practice, the systems lack the depth to sustain it. The monster roster is the high point. Getting 15 creature varieties means you spend time experimenting with placement and combination, trying to figure out which monsters counter which hero classes. A warrior charging in blind gets handled differently than a sneaky rogue or a spell-slinging mage, and the game does reward a little tactical thinking in how you arrange corridors and ambush points. Build variety exists, even if it never reaches the complexity of a proper strategy RPG. For players who enjoy fiddling with dungeon layouts and watching AI adventurers stumble into traps, there are stretches where it genuinely clicks. The problems are hard to ignore, though. With a Metacritic score of 65 and Steam reviews sitting at a mixed 45 percent positive, the player consensus is not flattering, and those numbers reflect real friction. The writing offers almost nothing in the way of character arcs or worldbuilding payoff, which as someone who reads every piece of in-game lore twice, I found genuinely deflating. The RPG tag in the genre listing is generous. The strategic layer is shallow compared to genre peers, and the whole package carries the dated feel of an early 2011 release that was not particularly polished at launch and has not aged gracefully. Filler content is present in abundance. Meaningful narrative decisions are absent. Who is this actually for? If you have already played and enjoyed the base Dungeons game and want more maps and monster variety without expecting a dramatic mechanical overhaul, Into the Dark delivers exactly that and nothing more. Completionists filling out the Dungeons library will get what they came for. Anyone hoping for a deep dungeon-management RPG with rewarding progression and story will leave hungry. The villain premise deserved smarter writing and tighter systems than it received here. Monika, Scout Team
