About DREDGE - Blackstone Key
Let's be honest about what this is. The Blackstone Key is not a DLC expansion. It is not a story chapter. It is not even a questline. It is a digital key that unlocks a workshop on Blackstone Isle and hands you two pieces of boat equipment: the Arterial Engine, a single-slot engine boosting your speed by 7.4 knots, and the Sign of Ruin, a single-slot rod-space charm that nudges your aberrant fish catch rate upward. That is the full inventory. The context that makes the community anger legible: this DLC launched on the same day as the base game. Black Salt Games have acknowledged that the Blackstone Key was originally intended to be part of bundled Deluxe Edition content, but publisher Team17 pulled it out as a separate purchasable add-on before launch. The Deluxe Edition on Steam does include it, so if you bought that bundle you already have these items and can stop reading. If you bought the standard edition and are considering a separate purchase, keep reading. The Arterial Engine is a compact early-game speed boost. Community consensus is that within roughly an hour of normal play it becomes outclassed by engines you can research and build through standard progression. The Jet Drive Engine of identical inventory footprint provides 9.5 knots versus the Arterial Engine's 7.4, so the gap is real. The Sign of Ruin's aberrant fish boost is modest, estimated at around 5%, and the visual indicators for aberrant spawn locations appear in the base game regardless of whether you own this DLC. Both items occupy precious cargo slots, which in DREDGE is a genuine cost, since grid space is a core resource you are constantly managing. The developers confirmed explicitly that neither item connects to the story. No lore expansion, no new dialogue, no hidden interaction at Blackstone Isle beyond grabbing your two items from the workshop. For a game whose entire strength is its atmosphere, its creeping Lovecraftian dread, its fishing-log entries that reward close reading, this DLC offers nothing in that register. The Mostly Negative Steam rating (39% positive across over 500 reviews) reflects a community that loves DREDGE but feels this add-on represents content that should have shipped in the box. That frustration is reasonable. If you are a DREDGE devotee who wants to support Black Salt Games, or if you are chasing an aberrant fish completion run and want every available edge, the Sign of Ruin has marginal use. For everyone else, the base game's own progression gives you better gear through normal play, and no story content is gated here. The Blackstone Key is essentially cosmetic-adjacent: two thematically flavourful items that do not move the needle on a build, a run, or a narrative. DREDGE itself is a genuinely great game. This add-on, by any fair measure, is not essential to it. Monika, Scout Team
