A five-hour first-person psychological horror that weaponizes your own mind against you - sanity decay, radiation poisoning, and a world that quietly rearranges itself while you blink.

I have a soft spot for scrappy one-developer horror experiments that nobody puts on a list, and Demented is exactly that kind of game. VisualTech48 built a first-person stealth horror set inside a facility that belongs somewhere between a Soviet research bunker and a fever dream, and the ambition threading through the systems is genuinely interesting even when the execution wobbles. The central hook is a three-way juggle between Health, Sanity, and Radiation. You play as Bennet Helms, a man with a brain tumor that causes his grip on reality to slip whenever he goes too long without pills. Let Sanity fall and the world starts playing tricks: hallucinations crawl into view, the vision field narrows, and hostile critters spawn at increasing frequency the lower your meter drops. That alone would be a workable horror loop, but Demented layers radiation on top. Absorb enough REMs and your Sanity decay slows or stops entirely, which sounds like a lifeline until you notice your health bleeding out at a steady drip, your movement slowing, and your hearing degrading past 85 REMs. The risk-reward math there is genuinely thoughtful for a game of this scope. Then there is the WCD system - World Changing Disorder - which acts as an environmental brain responding to your stat states. Walls that were passable can simply stop being passable. The System Shutdown mechanic cuts power at random intervals, plunging the facility into darkness. These are not scripted scares; they are procedural ones, which means even a second playthrough will unseat you in different places. The average session sits around five hours, which feels right. The game knows how long it wants to be, and that restraint matters. What does not always work is the polish layer. The Steam community has raised questions about whether listed achievements actually function in-game, and the Early Access origin shows in places - some environmental details feel unfinished, and the writing around the Visual Corporation mystery is thin enough that the lore can feel more gestured-at than delivered. Players who came in expecting something closer to Amnesia or Soma in terms of narrative craft may walk away wanting. Players who enjoy mechanically driven horror where the systems do the frightening - that five-hour runtime is a reasonable ask. Steam reviews land in the mostly-positive range, which feels honest. Demented is not a refined product, but it has the bones of something that cares about what it is doing. For a solo-developed horror experiment with interlocking survival systems and a world that misbehaves on purpose, the rough edges are part of the character. Kai, Scout Team
